Advocate for the poor - Caritas Vukovar
Not a day goes by that we are not confronted with a horrible tragedy somewhere in the world. Be it an ongoing war, a traumatic traffic accident or a major nature disaster, innocent victims are often left behind with only their clothes on their back.
‘Caritas’ and ‘Charity’ are words that show up immediately after a catastrophe hits the news. They are pleas for donations and support to help those in need to get back on their feet, either by handing out food, clothing, shelter or moral support. Charities are usually organized by groups or foundations, people with heart who want to protect and help the needy.
Centered in the county of Vukovar-Srijem and located at the confluence of the Vuka River and the Danube, Vukovar has been recognized as the biggest river port in Croatia, and as a city and municipality that has, in the last decades, fallen victim to devastatingly hard times. During the Croatian War of Independence (1991-1995) the city of Vukovar was destroyed almost beyond recognition. Many innocent citizens were killed and the devastated survivors were left with nothing but ruins.
Today, Vukovar’s infrastructure and economy are recovering, and even if at a slow pace, the rebuilding of this once glorious area would not be possible without the help of charity groups such as ‘Caritas Croatia,’ which firmly believes that the greatest strength of the reconstruction of a community lies in a well-developed support network and direct contact with the victims.
With the aim to rebuild the Vukovar community, Caritas Croatia is partnering with a number of humanitarian programs and charity organizations, and as an advocate for the poor, is attempting to provide adequate shelter, clothing, food, fuel and medicines for war orphans and families affected by those unforgettable and destructive hostilities.
There are many communities that helps people, one of these is http://workingcommunities.com.au/
